The Importance of Self Awareness

You’ve just finished the day job, which, depending on what field you are in was most likely extremely physically, mentally or emotionally exhausting! Or maybe your exhaustion comes from spending a large portion of your day doing a job that you really don’t like. You could simply be spending a significant chunk of your life around colleagues or bosses who lack any self awareness and are worlds away from the types of characters you would voluntarily choose to spend time with. It can suck the joy out of life and depletes you of your positive life force.

All you want to do is get home, shower, slip into something comfortable perhaps those uber cosy pj’s, and indulge in some comfort eating, preferably something fattening, whilst tucking into some world class escapism.

But all escapism has to come to an end eventually, the book doesn’t last forever, you must inevitably close the friends and family agony aunt hotline, or the binge-worthy series on Netflix comes to an end leaving you contemplating the meaning of life! Then the little voice from within whispers from beneath the layers of self abandonment

…”There’s got to be more to life than this!”

It’s you vs your comfort zone at this point and you get to decide who wins.

Do you allow yourself to fall into a comfort zone comatose? Or will you Jedi mind trick your patterns into choosing a different path? A different future! A different you! Someone who refuses to be hoodwinked by your sleep walking present day self?
The life you want to live is on the other side of your comfort zone and the bridge between where you are now and where you want to be is self awareness!

Many of us are sabotaging our dreams through a lack of self awareness. I always imagine that there are two selves, one that wants you to push through your self imposed mediocrity and to truly step into your power and the other self that is terrified of change. This point is illustrated beautifully by an old Cherokee story, The Tale of Two Wolves

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”

He continued, “The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

When your whole identity was based on a personality that was influenced by limiting self beliefs, it can invoke feelings similar to the fear of death, because there truly is a death that happens, the death of the former self. Fear may come to join you at the threshold between you and your future self… a more empowered version of you.

Sometimes its the fear of succeeding that stops us dead in our tracks!

The fear of success involves being afraid of achievement, often to the point that people will sabotage themselves.

We can be derailed by a lack of self confidence and begin to ask questions like; who will I be without my struggle, my excuses and my limiting beliefs?

Much of the time the difference between success and failure comes down to which wolf you feed… whether you feed your wolf fear or faith is down to you!
